Volker Linneweber, *1951, Prof. Dr. phil. habil., studied psychology (Dipl.-Psych. 1978), sociology and educational science (Dipl.-Päd. 1976) as well as doctorate (1982) at the University of Münster, habilitation at Saarland University (1991). Scientific assistant in the DFG priority program “Psychological Ecology” (1979-1984), postdoc in the “Program in Social Ecology” at the University of California at Irvine, USA (1985/86). Scientific assistant at Saarland University (1986-1990); visiting professorships in Jena, Heidelberg, Marburg and Saarbrücken (1990-1993); Scientific assistant at the “Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research”, Department of Global Change and Social Systems, among other things involved in the IPCC process (1993-1996). 1996-2006 Holder of the Chair of Social Psychology at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg (OvGU). Institute Director (1998-2000, 2005-2007), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Educational Sciences (2000-2002; previously Vice Dean 1998-2000), 2002-2006 Prorector for academic affairs at the OvGU. 2006-2017 President of Saarland University.
During his two terms in office, the university introduced the global budget, significantly increased the number of collaborative projects (collaborative research areas, graduate colleges) and the number of students and achieved multiple successes in the German Excellence Initiative. In addition, two non-university research institutions and the “University of the Greater Region” were established.
In 2016, Linneweber received the “University Manager of the Year” award by CHE (Center for University Development) and ZEIT.
Research projects: on social-psychological conflict research and work on psychological aspects of environmental experience, environmental use and design as well as associated controversies of involved actors. Areas worked on: immediate living environment, working environments, urban development, regional and global dimensions, energy and resource use, mobility.
Linneweber was a representative of the field of psychology on the scientific advisory boards of the German Committee for Disaster Risk Reduction (DKKV) and the CESR - Center for Environmental Systems Research, USF - Scientific Center for Environmental Systems Research, University of Kassel and chairman of the advisory boards of METOP GmbH (People ∙ Technology ∙ Organization ∙ Planning; affiliated institute of the OvGU) and the Institute for Future Energy and Material Flow Systems (IZES), Saarbrücken.
Linneweber was co-editor of the series “Psychologie - Forschung - aktuell” (“Psychology - Research - Current”) at Beltz, (Weinheim), “Umweltnatur- und Umweltsozialwissenschaften” (“Environmental Natural and Environmental Social Sciences”) at Springer (Heidelberg) and is on the scientific advisory board of the journal “Environmental Psychology”. From 1999-2003 Linneweber was spokesman for the environmental psychology section of the German Psychological Society (DGPs).
Volker Linneweber is active in advising university management as well as evaluating and accrediting universities and agencies. He also was involved in further education and training at the CHE. At the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Linneweber is the external member of the quality assurance commission.
Since 2022, he is advising experts on transformation processes in the strategy phase of a comprehensive “Integrated Urban Development Concept” (INSK) in the northern Ruhr area on the development goal of “Using the potential of scientific disciplines and institutions for regional development”
